At just 14 years old, Ileana Morgan entered the workforce for the first time, thanks to the Jobs League Program and its partnership with the Rolla Job Center. Her journey began at the St. James Caring Center, which she had long known about through her parents, who both work there. However, it wasn’t until she began working there herself that Ileana truly understood the vital role the Caring Center plays in the community.
Through the Rolla Job Center, Ileana was connected with Career Consultant Jean Solis, who guided her through the process. Despite her enthusiasm, Ileana faced personal challenges, including anxiety and low self-esteem. Fortunately, the support she received from Executive Director Nancy Montgomery and the Caring Center staff helped her navigate these obstacles.
“They assured me that they were able to assist me to overcome these barriers,” Ileana shared.
Initially, Ileana began her employment by tagging and hanging clothing in the Caring Center’s thrift store. The opportunity to earn her own money was a significant motivator, but the warm and supportive environment truly made a difference. As Ileana gained confidence, she was trained as a cashier, learning to operate the point-of-sale system and manage a bustling sales desk. The staff and customers welcomed her with patience and kindness, fostering a space where she could grow and thrive.

“I loved this job because of how friendly the staff and customers were to me,” Ileana recalled. “Everyone was so patient and helpful while I was learning.”
The skills Ileana developed at the Caring Center have left a lasting impact. As she looks ahead to graduating high school, she feels better equipped to enter the job market with practical experience and greater self-assurance. Although her participation in the Jobs League Program has concluded, Ileana continues to volunteer at the Caring Center, a testament to her positive experience.
“Even though my time is up with the Jobs League, I continue to volunteer at the Caring Center because I love it!” Ileana expressed enthusiastically.
The Jobs League Program, in partnership with community organizations like the St. James Caring Center, plays a crucial role in helping young individuals gain valuable job skills, overcome personal challenges, and foster a sense of purpose. Ileana’s story serves as a reminder of how these initiatives can transform lives and build brighter futures for local youth.
