When Jeffrey Tubbs reached out to the Columbia Job Center in May 2025, he was struggling to find a job that paid enough to support his future. But he wasn’t just looking for another paycheck. He wanted a career.
That decision led him to the Central Workforce Development Region, where he learned about training opportunities that could help him build new skills and pursue better-paying employment.
Finding a Path Forward
Jeffrey began by seeking help with his resume and job search. As he worked with staff at the Columbia Job Center, he learned about workforce programs designed to help unemployed and underemployed individuals gain the skills needed for new career opportunities.
Through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult program and the Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Good Jobs Challenge initiative, Jeffrey received assistance to attend Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training at Moberly Area Community College’s Columbia campus.
The training provided an opportunity to gain the skills needed for a career in transportation, one of the industries supported through the Good Jobs Challenge.
For Jeffrey, the opportunity meant more than earning a credential. It offered a chance to enter an industry with career possibilities that had previously been out of reach.
Training That Opened New Doors
Jeffrey committed himself to the training and, in October, successfully earned his Class A CDL.
Throughout the process, he received encouragement from college instructors and workforce partners who helped him navigate the transition into a new career field.
Speaking about the staff at Moberly Area Community College, Jeffrey said, “They went above and beyond to make sure the students were successful in getting their license.”
He also appreciated the guidance and assistance he received from workforce staff throughout his training.
Earning his CDL gave Jeffrey access to opportunities he hadn’t previously been able to pursue.
“The financial assistance I received allowed me to obtain a job and the experience I needed to be a truck driver and make a livable wage,” Jeffrey said. “Obtaining a CDL has opened up opportunities not previously available.”

More Than a Career Change
The impact of Jeffrey’s experience extended beyond his professional goals. Friends and family noticed a more positive outlook on life as he worked toward building a better future.
His story reflects what workforce development is meant to accomplish: helping individuals overcome employment barriers, gain valuable skills, and pursue careers that offer greater financial stability.
Jeffrey also has advice for others who may be considering vocational training but aren’t sure whether to take the first step.
“It will be hard work to go through a vocational program but the rewards at the end will definitely be worth it,” he said.
For Jeffrey, earning his CDL wasn’t simply about completing a training program. It was about opening doors to a future he could build on.
