Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) of Columbia and the Central Workforce Development Board (CWDB) collaborated to implement a CDL Apprenticeship Program to meet ESS demand for Class “A” CDL Truck Drivers.
35 applications received during recruitment were referred for pre- employment screening, which included drug testing and medical exams required for a CDL.

Participants selected for the CDL Apprenticeship receive intensive classroom instruction provided by an ESS Certified Instructor to obtain a Class “A” Driving Permit and pass the required pre-trip inspection exam. The combination of private and public sector funding increases employment opportunities for individuals who do not have the money to pay for Truck Driver Training (approximately $4800) and decreases the normal cost to train and place workers in CDL employment.
The CWDB Work Experience Program pays participants $22/hr, for a maximum of 300 hours during phase one of the Apprenticeship. Participants will earn $25/hr when they transition to ESS payroll to begin OJT employment.
