Kaitlyn Travis’s story is a testament to the power of determination, support, and the opportunities available through various workforce development programs.

Graduating from the State Fair Community College at Sedalia nursing program in May 2023 with an Associate Degree in Nursing and becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) with GrapeTree Medical Staffing earning over $40 per hour is remarkable. However, her journey to success was not without its challenges and the invaluable support of programs like the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult, SKILLUP, and Occupational Skills Training through the Capital City Job Center.

When Kaitlyn first walked through the doors of the Job Center, she faced a daunting set of circumstances. Unemployed then, Kaitlyn’s most recent work experience had been as a medical assistant. However, her ambitions were much higher than her circumstances, and she aspired to become a nurse. Nursing is a field known for its stability and high demand, offering a wealth of opportunities for those willing to put in the hard work and dedication.

Kaitlyn’s journey through nursing school was far from easy. As a single mother of four children, she faced the challenge of balancing her educational pursuits with the responsibilities of parenthood. Pursuing a nursing degree meant attending classes and clinicals five days a week, leaving little room for employment and precious time with her children.

This is where the support from programs like WIOA Adult, SKILLUP, and Occupational Skills Training through the Capital City Job Center came into play. These programs offered Kaitlyn the financial assistance and resources to overcome the hurdles that stood between her and her dreams. They provided funding for essential aspects of her education, including gas money, tuition, books, and other expenses not covered by PELL grants. This financial support allowed Kaitlyn to focus on her studies and move one step closer to becoming an RN.

“This program made it a lot easier to accomplish my goals,” said Kaitlyn. “It is important to stay in touch with your case manager. A lot of people don’t know that the WIOA/SkillUP grants offer more than just tuition, but the program can help when people are in a bind as well.”

Her testimony highlights the crucial role that these workforce development programs play in helping individuals like her reach their full potential. These programs go beyond simply covering tuition costs; they offer comprehensive support to individuals facing challenges and needing assistance to succeed.

Kaitlyn Travis’s story is a remarkable example of resilience and determination. Her experience reminds us that we can overcome obstacles and achieve our dreams with the right resources and unwavering commitment.

Congratulations, Kaityln.
