Josh Hayes, a participant in the Jobs League Program, found an opportunity to gain work experience and valuable life skills through the Work Experience program at the St. James Caring Center, facilitated by the Rolla Job Center. Reflecting on his journey, Josh shared his experience and the program’s significant impact on him.
“I did not have much work experience when Executive Director Nancy Montgomery told me about the program,” said Josh. “The sign-up process was straightforward with minimal paperwork, making it easy for me to start.”
Josh’s first role at the St. James Caring Center involved receiving donations from the community. “After a while, I learned how to sort the carts of donations to different locations in the sorting room. By the time the program ended, I had learned a ton of jobs,” he said. This hands-on experience allowed Josh to develop various skills, from organizational tasks to interpersonal communication.

Initially, Josh admitted he struggled with authority but soon adapted to working with others and understanding the importance of following instructions. This growth was a pivotal part of his journey, helping him become more collaborative and receptive to guidance.
One of the highlights of Josh’s experience was the supportive and friendly environment at the Caring Center. “The main reason I enjoyed working at the Caring Center is I liked how friendly everyone was and how much they were willing to help. I learned how to work with all types of people,” he shared. This positive atmosphere contributed to his personal and professional development, preparing him for future job opportunities.
With newfound confidence and skills, Josh is eager to seek employment next summer. He encourages others to consider the Jobs League Program, saying, “I would tell anyone looking for job experience to try the Jobs League Program. It was awesome!”
