Austin Harris knew he wanted more than just a job. While working at Walmart, he felt unfulfilled and ready for a different path. With encouragement from his direct supervisor, he connected with the WIOA Out-of-School Youth program in Central Missouri and took the first step toward a career he had always dreamed of pursuing.

From Enrollment to the Academy

In January 2025, Austin enrolled in the Missouri workforce program and began training at the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association Academy. The year-long program was fast-paced and hands-on, and Austin came ready — walking in already prepared for about 80% of his future employment duties. He earned multiple certifications, including his Police Officer License, and maintained perfect attendance throughout his training.

“The least enjoyable part of training was being pepper-sprayed,” he admits, “but I love my job and am happy I have a career I can enjoy.”

Wraparound Support That Made the Difference

Support from Central Region workforce staff played a key role in his success. Amanda Riley helped secure training and funding, making sure everything was in place so Austin could stay focused on his goals. Dawnella Holt provided monthly check-ins and supportive services, including transportation assistance, keeping him on track every step of the way.

A Career Change That Stuck

By December 2025, Austin completed the program and entered the workforce with confidence. Today, he has a stable career in law enforcement with benefits including paid time off, health and life insurance, and retirement. More importantly, he has a career he genuinely enjoys. The people around him have noticed the difference too — “they say I seem happier,” Austin shared with a smile.

The impact goes beyond employment. Austin reports feeling more financially secure and better able to support himself. What started as uncertainty has turned into a clear career path and a stronger foundation for the future. As he puts it: “I have a career, not just a job.”

Why Missouri Workforce Programs Matter

Austin’s story is proof that workforce programs can connect motivated individuals with meaningful careers. WIOA-funded programs like the Out-of-School Youth program don’t just help people find jobs — they build pathways to long-term stability by pairing real training with wraparound support.

For job seekers, that means a genuine shot at a career that fits. For employers, it means access to candidates who arrive prepared, credentialed, and committed. And for the communities and policymakers who invest in these programs, Austin is exactly the return on that investment: a young person who is now employed, self-sufficient, and contributing.

With the right support and training, Central Missourians can move from jobs that don’t fit to careers that build stability, purpose, and opportunity.
