On Friday, February 20, Columbia Job Center staff Nichelle Pool and Madison Wyse visited Jamestown High School to connect with second semester juniors and seniors.

Their focus was practical and forward-looking. Help students explore real career options before graduation.

During the visit, staff introduced students to Transfr virtual reality career exploration. Using VR goggles, students stepped into immersive simulations that reflect real workplaces across Missouri. They experienced different job environments, learned about daily tasks, and gained insight into training pathways connected to in-demand careers.

Hands-On Career Exploration Makes a Difference

Career decisions can feel overwhelming for high school students. Virtual reality helps make those decisions clearer.

Instead of guessing what a career might involve, students can see it. They can explore skilled trades, healthcare roles, advanced manufacturing, transportation, and other high-demand industries that power Missouri’s economy.

Experiences like this help students:

  • Understand what local jobs actually look like
  • Connect education to career pathways
  • Identify training or certification options
  • Build confidence about their next steps

Exposure during junior and senior year supports stronger transitions into college, training programs, apprenticeships, or direct employment.

Supporting Youth Workforce Development in Mid-Missouri

The Columbia Job Center works closely with schools to ensure students know their options. Early career exploration strengthens our regional workforce pipeline and helps employers connect with future talent.

When students see opportunity in their own communities, they are more prepared to make informed decisions that benefit both their future and Missouri’s workforce.
