The Central Workforce Development Board (CWDB), working with the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, is taking proactive initiatives to tackle the region’s workforce shortage. In 2022, the Chamber’s workforce coalition identified three key areas for improvement: Workforce Availability, Workforce Infrastructure, and Career Awareness.
After research and planning, the coalition launched strategic initiatives in 2023, which continue into 2024, including:
- High School Engagement: Exposing students to diverse career paths.
- Quality of Life Marketing: Promoting Jefferson City’s appeal to attract new workers.
- Eliminating Barriers: Addressing childcare, housing, and transportation obstacles.
- Internship Support: Connecting college students with local employers.
- Technical Education Alignment: Matching training programs with workforce needs.
“We’re excited to see the coalition’s hard work translate into real-world solutions,” said Amy Sublett, Executive Director of the Central Workforce Development Board and Coalition Co-Chair. “Collaboration is key, and we’re grateful for the dedication of our partners.”

The “JCMO: Live. Grow. Home” campaign is a crucial part of this effort, designed to attract workers to Jefferson City for greater stability and growth. Sublett leads the coalition’s talent attraction team, driving a marketing message across Mid-Missouri to recruit and retain workers. Paula Benne, President of C&S Business Services and Central Workforce Development Board member, also serves as Coalition Co-Chair.
“Workforce availability is an important issue impacting many industries and communities,” Sublett said. “This is a proactive approach intended to set Jefferson City apart.”
The area’s major industries, including manufacturers, food service, and hospitality, have cited a workforce shortage. Sublett believes that spreading awareness about the community’s virtues, including its parks, education, recreation, and dining options, is crucial to address this issue.
The campaign is a collaboration between the city and Cole County, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitor Bureau, the Jefferson City Regional Economic Partnership, the Jefferson City Area Board of Realtors, the Jefferson City School District, and the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce.
