Missouri is making a significant move to expand workforce opportunities across the state. The Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD) has announced a statewide goal of serving 100,000 new apprentices by September 30, 2027, and the Central Workforce Development Region is ready to help mid-Missouri employers and job seekers be part of that momentum.
What Is Registered Apprenticeship?
Registered Apprenticeship is a proven workforce model that combines on-the-job training with related technical instruction. Employers get to grow their own workforce, training employees in the specific skills their business needs. Workers earn while they learn, gaining industry-recognized credentials and advancing toward journeyman-level status in their field.
Since 2019, more than 70,600 Missourians have entered apprenticeship training across industries, including skilled trades, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and education. More than 25,000 have completed that training and achieved journeyman-level status.
Why This Matters for Mid-Missouri
As a statewide partner in registered apprenticeship, the Central Workforce Development Region plays a direct role in connecting people to these pathways. Whether you are an employer looking to build your workforce pipeline or a job seeker ready to earn a credential while you work, our Central Region Job Centers are here for you.
Our team works with employers to explore apprenticeships as part of broader workforce strategies, including on-the-job training, WIOA-funded services, and other employer supports. These tools work together to help businesses invest in their people while building long-term workforce strength.

Missouri’s Key Apprenticeship Goals
Alongside the 100,000 new apprentice target, MDHEWD has outlined additional statewide benchmarks:
- Increase active apprentices to 25,000
- Register 100 new apprenticeship programs or occupations
- Achieve 3 percent growth in apprenticeships in educational services, healthcare, and manufacturing
These goals align with a national push to surpass 1 million active apprentices, supported by federal investments through the U.S. Department of Labor.
