Success often comes from determination, support, and the right opportunities. Sara Atkisson’s journey from a Patient Care Technician to a Registered Nurse epitomizes this.

A recent graduate from Columbia College, Lake of the Ozarks nursing program, Sara’s story is an inspiring testament to hard work and the power of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult program.

After earning her Associate Degree in Nursing, Sara became a licensed Registered Nurse and secured a full-time position at the University of Missouri at Capital Region Medical Center.

Determined to advance her career, Sara sought assistance at the Central Region Job Center in the Lake area and enrolled in the WIOA Adult, Occupational Skills Training, and Good Jobs Challenge Grant (EDA) programs.

Enrollment in these programs provided essential support for her education, including assistance with books and supplies. However, the program’s impact extended beyond financial aid. Jaci, a dedicated Case Manager, offered support and encouragement throughout Sara’s journey.

“The WIOA program was such a huge help, and Jaci is absolutely AMAZING to work with! She goes above and beyond for her clients. From assistance with books and supplies to support and encouragement, I had it all,” says Sara.

Transitioning from a Patient Care Technician to a Registered Nurse, Sara saw her earnings increase by nearly $12 per hour. Not only that, but she continues to make a difference in the lives of her patients.

Sara’s success story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with determination, the proper support, and the opportunities programs like WIOA provide. Her journey from a Patient Care Technician to a Registered Nurse demonstrates the importance of investing in education and training to unlock one’s full potential.

Way to go, Sara!
