In collaboration with the Central Workforce Development Region (CWDR), COPIC has teamed up with Flourish in Columbia to offer valuable work experience opportunities to youth facing economic and educational barriers. Flourish, an independent nonprofit organization established by Veterans United Home Loans employees, is dedicated to fostering life-changing opportunities for individuals encountering educational and economic challenges.

At Flourish, youth and families are placed at the forefront of all initiatives, focusing on providing a safe and supportive environment, nurturing relationships, and developmental opportunities. The organization’s goal is to holistically support the well-being of individuals, enabling them to transition from simply surviving to thriving.

COPIC staff has been instrumental in providing work experience opportunities for several clients, including Rubiana Martinez, Caitie Johnson, Daqual Wright, CharRon Ray, Shayne Armstrong, and Alexia (Margaret) Gates. These individuals have gained valuable skills and experiences through their work placements with various organizations, including Women’s Hospital at MU, Habitat for Humanity, and MU in Sterile Processing.

Each client has shared remarkable insights into the impact of their work experiences. Rubiana Martinez expressed gratitude for the perioperative work experience at Women’s Hospital, noting significant growth in communication skills and self-advocacy.

Caitie Johnson highlighted the valuable skills gained through event planning and office coordination at Habitat for Humanity, emphasizing the importance of flexibility, problem-solving, and professional communication. 

Daqual Wright spoke about the meaningful experiences and teamwork skills acquired during their time with the construction team at Habitat. 

CharRon Ray appreciated the profound insights gained from the work experience in Sterile Processing at MU, including developing time management skills and the opportunity to start a career path in healthcare. 

Shayne Armstrong underscored the eye-opening experiences as a construction crew member at Habitat for Humanity, expressing a desire to make a positive impact in their community. 

Finally, Alexia (Margaret) Gates shared the life-changing knowledge acquired as a nurse assistant at MU, highlighting her professional growth and commitment to pursuing further opportunities in the healthcare field.

The partnership between CWDR and Flourish highlights the potential for collaborative efforts to provide meaningful work experiences that empower individuals and break down barriers to economic and educational success.
