Navigating Waves of WIOA Success: Carson’s Journey into the Marine Industry

Carson Droegemueller had always known that his passion lay in the marine industry. His love for working on mechanical issues and his desire to explore his interests further led him on a remarkable journey of self-discovery and professional growth. 

Determined to turn his passion into a lifelong career, Droegemueller embarked on a quest to find the right educational program to equip him with the necessary skills and knowledge.

In his pursuit, he stumbled upon the State Fair Community College website. Here, he first learned about the Lake Career and Technical Center, which offered a Marine Technology Program. Intrigued by the possibilities, Carson visited the school and explored the opportunities. 

Enrolling in the Fall of 2023, Carson soon discovered his dreams were within reach. At the Lake Career and Technical Center, he was introduced to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Program, a resource that would prove pivotal in his educational journey. 

Droegemueller successfully secured funding for his tuition costs through the WIOA Program. Additionally, he received assistance in the form of Supportive Services, including gas assistance, which helped him overcome the financial hurdles associated with attending school.

Carson thrived in his studies thanks to the help of Case Manager Dawnella Holt from the Lake Area Job Center Affiliate location. Dawnella provided unwavering support throughout his training, ensuring his educational experience was smooth and fulfilling. 

Beyond the classroom, Droegemueller seized an opportunity to gain practical experience through work-based learning at Wright’s B&M Marina. This hands-on involvement further deepened his understanding of the marine industry and enhanced his skill set.

In May 2023, Carson’s dedication paid off when he completed his training and received a Certificate of Completion. But his accomplishments did not end there. He also earned a SkillsUSA Career Essentials certificate, reflecting his commitment to excellence, and a Yamaha Marine University certificate, attesting to his specialized knowledge in the field. 

The doors of opportunity swung wide open for Carson when he was offered full-time employment at the marina. It was a validation of his skills and a testament to the quality of his training. In recognition of his dedication, he received a well-deserved raise of $2.00/hr just one month into his employment. This increase in income not only granted him financial stability but also allowed him the freedom to pursue his interests and participate in activities he enjoyed.

Reflecting on his journey, Droegemueller acknowledged that his previous job as a DoorDash driver had not provided him with the means to be self-supporting. However, through his marine industry training, he gained access to a fulfilling career that aligned with his passions. 

Inspired by his newfound purpose, Carson has his sights on a long-term goal: working for the Missouri Water Patrol once he reaches the minimum age requirement. Carson recognized that the training and experience he gained through the program will be invaluable in pursuing this career.

With his eyes fixed on the future, Droegemueller intends to continue working at the marina until January 2025, when he plans to enroll in the Water Patrol Academy. This forward-thinking approach showcased his determination and unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth.

Throughout his journey, Carson encountered numerous individuals who played instrumental roles in his success. Notably, he formed a strong bond with Timothy Keeney, the instructor at Lake Career and Technical Center. Timothy’s guidance and mentorship proved invaluable to Carson, who knew he could rely on him for support, even beyond the confines of the program. 

“I much appreciate all the assistance I received from the program as well as the individuals who administered the program benefits,” said Droegemueller. “I look forward to being in the marine industry as a lifelong career.”
