Empowering Success: How the WIOA Grant Helped Miranda Slaton Become a Registered Nurse

Miranda Slaton, a recent graduate from the Southwest Baptist University Nursing program, has achieved her dream of becoming a registered nurse (RN) with the help of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant. The grant, provided through the WIOA Adult Occupational Skills Training program, relieved the financial burden of her education and offered support and guidance throughout her journey.

While unemployed, Slaton’s path to success began when she sought assistance from the Job Center. Previously working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), earning $19.00/hr, she aimed to advance her career by becoming an RN. However, the cost of higher education posed a significant obstacle. Fortunately, WIOA presented a life-changing opportunity for Miranda.

It eased the financial burden and provided the necessary support and guidance for Slaton. It enabled her to cover her education costs, alleviating the stress often associated with pursuing higher education. Additionally, the program helped her set clear goals and develop a roadmap for achieving them.

“Whoever reads this, just know that dreams can come true, and there is a great program/grant that can help,” said Miranda. “Yes, you’ll have to work hard for the dream, but it’s more than worth it! I could not have made it without the WIOA grant. It not only helped me with the financial burden of education costs and cut down the stress. I was also able to set goals, make plans on how to reach my goals, and reflect on my progress. I had wonderful support and guidance from my case worker, Jaci.”

Having successfully completed her nursing program, Miranda proudly achieved her goal of becoming a registered nurse. She recently secured a full-time position as an ICU nurse at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO.
