Makinzie Dinwiddie’s experience is a powerful example of the WIOA program’s impact on individuals seeking a better life path. In September 2022, Makinzie, an unemployed high school dropout who had completed only 9th grade, enrolled as a Youth participant through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program.
Recognizing her basic skills deficiencies in reading and math, she dedicated herself to attending AEL classes at the OTC- Lebanon Campus. With determination and perseverance, Makinzie worked tirelessly to improve her foundational knowledge in these critical subjects.
Makinzie also successfully participated in the Career Club, an initiative designed to enhance job readiness skills and provide insights into potential career paths. This opportunity allowed her to gain valuable knowledge about various professions and develop essential skills that would serve her well in the job market.
Throughout her journey, Makinzie faced a unique challenge. She was expecting her first child while pursuing her educational goals. However, this did not deter her from attending classes regularly and maintaining employment in the food service industry. Makinzie’s ability to balance her responsibilities and aspirations demonstrated her strong commitment to personal growth and a better future for herself and her growing family.
